William Mulholland was a titan of his industry. He was self-taught engineer whom had completed the California aqueduct which is still in use even today. His last project was the St. Francis Dam, a public works project designed to allocate enough water for a year’s supply for a bustling and ever expanding Los Angeles. Due to an unstable foundation, the dam failed and killed more than 450 people and remains the second greatest loss of life in California history
